PART ICLE PHYSICS The decay of Bs mesons into pairs of muons is one of the rarest measurable processes in physics. The LHCb and CMS experiments at CERN's Large Hadron Collider have finally observed this decay mode, which scientists have been looking for over the past 25 years. The results show that only a few mesons in a billion decay in this way. These findings are remarkably consistent with the Standard Model, the theory that describes the interactions between the fundamental particles of matter. CELL BIOLOGY A protein that regulates cell migration, i.e. the ability of certain cells to move, has been discovered. Called Arpin, it slows migration and enables the cell to control its direction. Since cell migration and metastases are closely linked, this discovery is likely to have a significant impact on cancer research.
