CNRS is also the leading European research partner for creating start-ups, with more than 700 innovative companies launched since the year 2000. Professional training is another effective vehicle for knowledge transfer. We scheduled 136 training sessions in 2012.” Innovative technology transfer solutions New entities were set up to promote technology transfer in 2012. Theme-based Technology Transfer Consortiums and Technology Transfer Companies meet one of the principal objectives of France’s Investments for the Future program (IA): help national industry become more competitive by facilitating technology transfer between public research and businesses. CNRS is a founding member and/ or shareholder in the five CVTs and nine SATTs created in 2012 (fourteen eventually). As a member of their operational management teams and/or Boards of Directors, CNRS is closely involved in the daily operations of these novel organizations, notably through its subsidiary FIST SA. “CNRS makes a very direct contribution in helping discoveries reach maturity and in accelerating processes for transferring new technologies to business. CVTs act as portals by providing expertise, strategic advice, and high value-added services to various stakeholders in the ecosystem: SATTs, Technological Research Institutes, France Brevet, etc.,” says Pierre Gohar. “Imaging agents”, the first Strategic Technology Transfer Field (DVS) of the Aviesan1 CVT, was founded in January 2013. CNRS is its scientific coordinator. SATTs are at the crossroads of research and business; their main task is to accelerate the industrialization of scientific discoveries by helping them reach maturity. These new innovative entities provide a regional framework for leveraging public research. CNRS has already signed an agreement with Conectus Alsace, the first SATT. Other agreements are in the pipeline, notably with Toulouse Tech Transfert and Ile de France Innov. A large proportion of research work carried out in CNRS laboratories is devised for efficient technology transfer towards society.” Joël Bertrand, Chief Research Officer 2012 A year at CNRS
