Our planet and the universe Exploring the oceans From the subtle dynamics of ocean circulation to the impact of global warming on marine organisms, to a wreck buried in sediment: the oceans provide a boundless field of investigation for scientists. 44 New wreck found in Caska, Croatia Archeologists have made a remarkable discovery in a Croatian island cove: a second Roman wreck lying on the sea bed at a depth of three meters. Like the first wreck (Caska 1, which is smaller and was excavated in 2009-10), Caska 2 was probably sunk some time during the first or second century AD to serve as a foundation for a wharf. However, while the hull of Caska 1 was bound together with plant fibers, that of Caska 2, about 15 meters long, was assembled using the mortise and tenon system widespread in the Mediterranean in Roman times.
