Our planet and the universe Exploring the oceans From the subtle dynamics of ocean circulation to the impact of global warming on marine organisms, to a wreck buried in sediment: the oceans provide a boundless field of investigation for scientists. 44 New wreck found in Caska, Croatia Archeologists have made a remarkable discovery in a Croatian island cove: a second Roman wreck lying on the sea bed at a depth of three meters. Like the first wreck (Caska 1, which is smaller and was excavated in 2009-10), Caska 2 was probably sunk some time during the first or second century AD to serve as a foundation for a wharf. However, while the hull of Caska 1 was bound together with plant fibers, that of Caska 2, about 15 meters long, was assembled using the mortise and tenon system widespread in the Mediterranean in Roman times. Observing and collecting wood samples from the submerged Roman wreck found in Caska cove (Island of Pag, Croatia), to identify the tree species used to build it. A year at CNRS 2012
