Computing: a booming discipline Much in demand in today’s world, information technology advances in leaps and bounds. In this field, Big Data and ultra-miniaturization of storage systems are leading the way. The GENCI’s (French very large-scale computing facility) supercomputer, Curie. 30 A White Paper on supercomputing Modeling, simulation and processing of large amounts of data are at the core of many research advances. Now, CNRS has published a White Paper reporting the results of an analysis and review of the use of supercomputing in its institutes. The report reveals that supercomputing practice involves more than 2,500 researchers and academics, and that the emergence of huge amounts of data is set to become a crucial scientific issue. It also shows that requirements are not being met in all disciplines. Scientific computation: a new impetus for French research capability In order to meet today’s main scientific challenges, such as decoding the genome or modeling the climate, many disciplines require massive computing power. The French very large-scale computing center (GENCI) has provided CNRS’s IDRIS (Institute for Development and Resources in Intensive Scientific Computing) with two new supercomputers designed by IBM. Dubbed Turing and Ada, they together total more than one petaflop/s (1015 operations per second) with minimal energy consumption, and foreshadow tomorrow’s supercomputers. A year at CNRS 2012
