The European Interest Group (EIG) CONCERT-Japan (CONnecting and Coordinating European Research and Technology Development with Japan) announced, on April 10th, 2017 the upcoming launch of its 2017 call for projects. This new call will tackle the very scientifically and technologically challenging theme of "Efficient Energy Storage and Distribution".

The overall aim of this scheme is to support research to further the development of more efficient, reliable, secure, flexible and sustainable technologies in energy storage and distribution of electricity. The topic scope is inclusive of all related areas from stationary applications for smart energy grids to mobile applications for transportation.

In 2017, participating funding institutions will be:

  • Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST)
  • French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS)
  • German Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF)
  • Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness – through the State Research Agency (MINECO–AEI)
  • Research Council of Norway (RCN)
  • Slovak Academy of Science (SAS)
  • Czech Academy of Sciences (CAS)
  • Lithuanian Agency for Science, Innovation and Technology (MITA)
  • Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK)

Scientific communities from the countries mentioned above will be eligible according to the national or regional rules established by their related institutions. In France, the CNRS will fund French research teams attached to CNRS-affiliated laboratories.

This call counts as the fourth call for projects launched since the inception of the CONCERT-Japan initiative. Initially implemented under an ERA-Net program financed by the European Commission, CONCERT-Japan launched, in 2011 and 2014, two calls for projects on “Resilience against disasters & Efficient energy storage and Distribution” and “Photonic manufacturing”.

In the light of the successful results of this European-Japanese multilateral program, some partners of the ERA-NET CONCERT-Japan decided, in 2015, to maintain the Joint Calls activities under the framework of the EIG CONCERT-Japan. Subsequently, five projects were selected for funding on the thematic “Food crops and Biomass production Technologies” in 2016.

The main objective of the EIG CONCERT-Japan is to strengthen scientific cooperation between the European Research Area and Japan on priority topics that are also complementary of the Horizon 2020 program (European Commission). Submitted projects will have to involve at least two partners from two different eligible European countries in addition to one Japanese partner and will have to be sequenced on a three-year period.
